Why recycled rags in the shop
In a garage you wipe all day: hands, tools, dipsticks, parts, spills. Paper tears as soon as it's soaked with oil. A cotton rag absorbs more, stays strong and costs less per use.
- Oil and grease: terry (towel cloth) is thick and holds a lot of liquid.
- General use: soft, flexible colored T-shirt rags for hands, tools and everyday cleanup.
- Painted surfaces: white rags, with no color transfer, for detailing and touch-ups.
Which rag to choose
For most garages, colored rags give the best value: $32 per 25 lb bag. Use terry for big oil spills, and keep a few bags of white rags for bodywork and delicate finishes.
Safety: oily rags
Store rags soaked with oil, solvent or gasoline in a closed metal container, never in a pile in a corner. See the guide oily rags and fire risk.
