In a machine shop
- Wiping parts after machining, before measuring or inspection.
- Cutting oil and coolant around lathes and machining centers.
- Maintaining ways, vises and tools.
- Hands, benches and floors.
Which rag to choose
Colored terry holds the most fluid. Colored T-shirt rags are softer for parts. Both cost $32 per 25 lb bag. To compare, see the guide terry vs T-shirt.
Watch out for chips
A rag used near a machine can hold sharp metal chips. Don't reuse it on hands or a delicate surface.
One bin per station
A bin of rags at each machine avoids waste and keeps oil off the floor. Used rags go in a closed metal container emptied daily, especially with cutting oils.
